Below are two lists of names taken from the New Testament. They both claim to be the genealogy for Jesus tracing all the way back to Abraham. At first glance you will see that the list from Luke's gospel contains fifteen more generations that that of Matthew. If you suppose that each generation was at least twenty years old when they had their respective child, (typically, for the period this age would be higher), that is a difference of three hundred years. Many scholars say that the list in Luke's gospel is actually Mary's. The problem with this assertion is that the text does not say it. The fact that there are two different genealogies for Jesus is suspect. When you consider the facts that both genealogies have problems that exempt Jesus from being the messiah of Israel, the entire New Testament becomes suspect.
